Neeraj Koul, a seasoned professional with a PhD in computer science, has taken on the role of Chief Data Officer (CDO) at the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). With nearly two decades of experience spanning academia, the private sector, non-profit organisations, and the federal government, Koul brings a wealth of knowledge to his new position.

Prior to joining the FRA, Koul held the CDO position at BMC Software. Now, he leads data-related initiatives within the agency, providing strategic guidance to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient movement of people and goods.

The FRA has been collecting safety data from railroads for a long time. Two particularly important datasets that the FRA gathers are information on railroad incidents and accidents. These datasets are crucial in supporting decision-makers, inspectors, and grant teams at the FRA, as well as in strengthening its safety measures.

Data plays a pivotal role in achieving the FRA's mission. Koul, as the FRA's CDO, emphasises the importance of data in this context. He states, "Data is essential for ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient movement of people and goods, and it supports the present and future of America."

As a Senior Technical Advisor at the FRA, Koul's focus has been on harnessing data to drive mission success. Under his leadership, the FRA continues to leverage data to improve safety, efficiency, and reliability in the rail industry.

Koul's tenure at the FRA underscores the agency's commitment to leveraging data to achieve its goals. With his extensive experience and expertise, Koul is well-positioned to lead the FRA in its data-driven approach to rail safety.
