"V-8 engine-powered Mercedes AMG CLE 63 set for imminent introduction"

Mercedes-AMG has announced that its new V-8 engine will debut in the upcoming 2026 CLE 63, marking a significant shift from the current plug-in hybrid configuration. The information about the new engine was learned from sources by Autocar.

The new V-8 engine, expected to be introduced in 2023, is a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 with a mild-hybrid system. This engine will deliver strong performance combined with improved efficiency, much like the AMG GT 63 S E Performance, which pairs the V8 with a 150 kW electric motor for a total output of 816 PS. The hybrid system aids in performance while providing approximately 13 km of electric range, mainly enhancing driving dynamics rather than everyday electric driving.

One of the key features of the new engine is the flat-plane crankshaft, which will aid packaging efficiency and allow for a higher rev limit. This technology was previously employed by AMG in the GT Black Series launched in 2021. The flat-plane crankshaft is also expected to contribute to the engine's distinctive sound, as AMG may incorporate sound generators to replicate the deeper, burbling engine note of its current V-8.

The CLE 63 will be the first model to debut with the new V-8 engine, according to Mercedes-Benz. Prototypes for the CLE 63 have been spotted multiple times over the past year, including in convertible form. After its debut in the new CLE 63, the new V-8 engine is likely to make its way into other AMG models.

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that it will continue to offer V-8 and V-12 engines for the foreseeable future, with plans to develop a new generation of V-8 engines with electrification. The company will also continue to offer gas cars, including some with V-8 engines, well into the next decade, similar to Porsche's plans.

No further details on the new V-8 engine were provided in the strategy presentation by Mercedes-Benz. The CLE 63 is expected to go on sale in the U.S. as a 2026 model. Michael Schiebe, AMG boss, has previously ruled out the possibility of the C 63 being powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-4 in a plug-in hybrid configuration.
