Video of 2020 Norwegian landslide tragically obliterating coastline homes mistakenly circulated as Jammu, India event

In recent days, a viral video has been circulating on social media, claiming to show a landslide in Jammu, India, following heavy rains. However, a closer look at the facts reveals a different story.

The video, which has caused quite a stir, was actually filmed in Alta, Norway, not Jammu, India. Resident Jan Egil Bakkedal captured the video, which shows a massive landslide in the Kråkneset area, submerging eight houses in the Norwegian Sea. The incident occurred on 3rd June 2020.

In the Kråkneset area, the landslide measured between 650 and 800 metres wide and up to 40 metres high. Fortunately, no one was harmed in the landslide accident in Norway. A dog was swept away by the water during the landslide but was later rescued.

Meanwhile, in Jammu and Kashmir, heavy rains have caused flooding and landslides, crippling communication and infrastructure. Rising rivers displaced thousands of people, exposing the region's growing vulnerability to natural disasters. In August 2025, record monsoon rains triggered floods and landslides in Jammu and Kashmir, killing at least 34-41 people.

Authorities launched large-scale evacuations and relief operations in Jammu and Kashmir, and schools were shut, train services suspended, bridges collapsed, and highways blocked. Nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution due to the landslide in Norway.

It is important to verify information before sharing it, especially during times of crisis. The claim made in the post about the viral video showing a landslide in Jammu, India, following heavy rains is FALSE. Multiple media reports from 5th June 2020 feature the extended version of the same video, confirming that it was filmed in Alta city, Norway.
