Vigorously energized following an active summer trading period, Rennes stands revitalized
Rennes, the French Ligue 1 club, have been busy in the transfer market this summer, with a series of signings aimed at strengthening their squad and challenging for Europe.
The club, which has faced instability with four coaches, three sporting directors, and two different presidents over the past few years, has seen a change at the helm. Loïc Désiré has succeeded Frédéric Massara as sporting director, and under his leadership, Rennes have been actively pursuing new talent.
One of the key signings for Rennes this summer has been Breel Embolo, who joins the club as part of a new strike duo in the 3-5-2 formation. Embolo was a target for Rennes since the first transfer market meetings, and his arrival was made possible by the club's convincing financial situation. The departure of Leo Östigard and Albert Grønbaek has also contributed to a decrease in the wage bill.
Rennes have also signed Esteban Lepaul, who joins a squad that has been halved this summer. The club has seen twenty-six departures, with only two players from previous international signings remaining in the squad - Hans Hateboer and Glen Kamara. The transfer balance shows approximately 140 M€ spent and sold over the 2025 transfer windows.
The transfer of Christopher Wooh to Spartak Moscow indicates open markets for further signings, and Rennes have been focusing on Conrad Harder and Lepaul. However, the young Dane chose RB Leipzig, leaving Rennes to look elsewhere for reinforcements.
Rennes have also signed a number of players with Ligue 1 experience, as well as young talents, to strengthen their squad. Brice Samba, Seko Fofana, Anthony Rouault, Lilian Brassier, Valentin Rongier, Quentin Merlin, Mahdi Camara, Przemyslaw Frankowski, and Embolo have all joined the club this summer.
The arrival of these new players has been timely, as Rennes president Arnaud Pouille had expressed a challenge for the team in May. The club can remain ambitious with the support of its powerful shareholder, the Pinault family, and the door opened for Embolo in the last week, completing a squad designed to challenge Europe.
However, the transfer of Arnaud Kalimuendo, a key player for Rennes, was a late one, with the striker leaving the club on August 18. Despite this, Rennes are optimistic about their chances in the upcoming season, and fans will be eagerly awaiting the team's first match to see how the new signings perform.
