Viking Team Secures Carson Wentz, Trades Sam Howell to Eagles, According to Report

The Minnesota Vikings have made a significant move in the quarterback department, acquiring veteran signal-caller Carson Wentz from the Philadelphia Eagles. The trade, which also involved draft picks, marks Wentz's sixth team in as many years.

Wentz, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, spent five seasons as the Eagles' starter before being traded. He has a record of 47 wins, 46 losses, and 1 tie in his 94 career starts. Throughout his career, Wentz has completed 62.7% of his passes, totaling 22,410 yards, 153 touchdowns, 67 interceptions, and an 89.3 passer efficiency rating.

In his last playing year with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024, Wentz served as Patrick Mahomes' backup. Before joining the Vikings before the 2025 season, he had a brief stint with the Chiefs.

Meanwhile, the Eagles are expected to replace Wentz with Sam Howell, who was acquired by the Vikings during the 2025 NFL Draft. Howell, who played for FCS New Hampshire and the Minnesota Golden Gophers, has completed 62.6 percent of his passes for 4,139 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions in his NFL career. He is expected to serve as Jalen Hurts' backup in the Eagles.

The Vikings sent a 2026 sixth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round selection to the Eagles for Howell. This move comes after the Vikings signed veteran quarterback Carson Wentz, who will likely take the starting role.

In the Vikings' exhibitions, Brosmer completed 35 out of 58 passes for 364 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. Rypien, another quarterback on the Vikings' roster, hit 15 out of 30 passes for 151 yards and one interception during exhibition play. Rypien is the nephew of Super Bowl champion Mark Rypien. He has made four NFL starts since debuting with the Denver Broncos in 2020.

With the addition of Wentz and the potential for Howell to develop, the Vikings' quarterback position looks set for an interesting season. The team will be hoping that these changes will lead to improved performances and a push towards playoff contention.
