Volkswagen introduces an electrifying change for the Polo model, renaming it ID Polo.
Volkswagen is set to expand its electric vehicle lineup with a series of new models, including the much-anticipated ID. Polo and its sporty counterpart, the ID. Polo GTI. The German automaker is also planning an electric counterpart to the T-Cross, named the ID. Cross.
The ID. Polo, the first model to be part of this new strategy, will debut in 2026, marking exactly 50 years since the original Polo was introduced. The ID. Polo GTI, a sporty variant of the ID. Polo, is also on the horizon, but details about its technology, exact market launch, and prices have yet to be revealed.
Thomas SchΓ€fer, the brand CEO, has emphasized that the ID. Polo is just the beginning, indicating more models will follow the electric adaptation of the Polo. The ID. Cross Concept, an electric compact SUV, will have its world premiere in a few days, and the production version of the ID. Cross Concept, simply ID. Cross, is set to launch as an electric counterpart to the T-Cross at the end of 2026.
Volkswagen is transferring well-known model designations from the internal combustion engine world to the fully electric ID. family. The model previously known as the ID.2all will now be called the ID. Polo. The ID. family, introduced in 2018, denotes the independent fully electric range in the Volkswagen portfolio.
Martin Sander, a member of the Volkswagen brand board of management, stated that the ID. models will have names that evoke emotions and are part of people's everyday lives. The ID.7, currently the largest model in the ID. family, is available as a sedan and station wagon.
SchΓ€fer has mainly spoken about the Golf and Tiguan, but the Polo is leading the way in the electric adaptation process. Both the ID. Polo and the ID. Polo GTI will be unveiled to the public for the first time at the IAA Mobility in Munich from September 8 to 14.
In addition to the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, Volkswagen is also planning new entries such as the affordable VW ID.1 (from 2027) inspired by the VW up!, and China-exclusive concepts like the seven-seater SUV ID. ERA, the SUV-related ID EVO, and the electric sedan ID. AURA, which reflects the ID.7 design.
An image gallery of the ID. Polo (pre-production) is available, offering a sneak peek at the upcoming electric vehicle. As Volkswagen continues to expand its electric lineup, the ID. Polo and ID. Cross are poised to make a significant impact in the automotive industry.
