In the political landscape of Germany, four major parties stand out: the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SDP), the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), the Greens, and the Alternative for Germany (AfD).

The SDP, a party that emphasizes social issues such as justice, has been a significant player in German politics for many years. The CDU, another major party, is known for its Christian democratic ideology. In federal politics, the CDU and its Bavarian sister party, the CSU, work together and are collectively known as the Union. The CDU exists in all federal states except Bavaria, where the CSU party is.

The Greens, a party with a strong focus on environmental policy, also holds a prominent position in German politics. Many of their politicians sit in the Bundestag, and they are represented in many state parliaments as well.

The AfD, a party that was established in 2013, entered the Bundestag in 2017. Initially, the AfD was primarily against the Euro, but later it mainly protested against refugees and Islam, which many politicians find xenophobic.

The political landscape in Germany has recently seen a significant shift. The early federal election was triggered by the breakdown of the governing "traffic light" coalition (SDP, Greens, FDP) on November 6, 2024. Chancellor Olaf Scholz called a vote of confidence which he lost in December 2024, thereby enabling the dissolution of the Bundestag and the scheduling of new elections for February 23, 2025.

As the election date approaches, the parties will present their manifestos and vie for the support of the German electorate. The outcome of these elections will shape the future of Germany's political landscape.
