Walking to the curbside via bus?

The Landesverkehrswacht NRW website sheds light on an innovative alternative to daily car trips for school children - the "Walking Bus". This method, which does not involve any motorized vehicles, is gaining traction in Bielefeld, as reported by news aktuell from Polizei Bielefeld.

The "Walking Bus" is essentially a group of primary school students who walk to school together, accompanied by at least one adult. The concept allows parents with multiple children or other parents to walk their children to school together, promoting a sense of community and safety.

The route for the "Walking Bus" is a designated one, similar to a bus stopping at bus stops. This helps children learn to navigate traffic safely and promotes their independence. As more children join the "Walking Bus", more adult supervisors are recommended to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants. The accompanying adults can intervene if needed.

The initiative for the "Walking Bus" in Bielefeld was first proposed in January 2012, in cooperation with students from the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Bielefeld. It began at the Stiftsschule Bielefeld and has since grown in popularity.

The "Walking Bus" is not just a beneficial solution for the children involved, but also for the environment and traffic congestion. By discouraging parents from driving their children to school, the "Walking Bus" helps reduce traffic congestion, making the city's roads less crowded and more efficient.
