Warning Signs: Unsafe Job Opportunities Arriving via Messenger Applications

In the Meissen district, a woman has fallen victim to a sophisticated fraud scheme involving a seemingly legitimate work-from-home job offer. The alleged U.S. company, Eva Commerce, contacted the woman via WhatsApp, promising easy extra income for forwarding orders from well-known companies like Wayfair, eBay, TikTok, or Zalando.

The job offer, however, was a ruse. After an "orientation phase," the scammers set up an online work account for the woman and paid her an initial commission of 127 Euros. But things soon took a turn for the worse. The woman was later asked to pay upfront for packages, leading to her losing over 30,000 Euros within a few days.

The scammers demanded 38,000 Euros for the release of the woman's funds when she tried to withdraw them. In response, the woman has filed a criminal complaint and sought legal assistance.

Legal advisor Anett Wagner warns that offers via messaging apps should raise suspicion. "Serious employers communicate professionally and clearly," she says. Unrealistic income promises, upfront payments, or payments in cryptocurrencies can be warning signs, according to Wagner.

This fraud scheme is not an isolated incident. The Saxon Consumer Center has highlighted similar cases involving job offers received via messaging apps or SMS. Wagner advises that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. She encourages potential job seekers to be vigilant and cautious when considering work-from-home opportunities.

The woman's work account showed a balance of over 195,000 USD, a testament to the scale of the scam. The incident serves as a stark reminder for everyone to exercise caution when faced with job offers, especially those received via unconventional channels.
