In the heart of Gangneung, Gangwon, a severe drought has led to unprecedented measures. President Lee Jae Myung declared a state of disaster in the region, marking the gravity of the situation.

One such measure is the utilization of public water fountains for emergency water needs. The water fountain in Daegwanryeong, a bustling district of Gangneung, has become a vital source of water for citizens during these trying times.

The water fountain in Daegwanryeong stands as a testament to the impact of the drought on the region's water supply. The Obong Reservoir, with a surface area of approximately 220 square kilometers, was seen dried up on Aug. 29. Before evaporation, it held around 3.5 billion cubic meters of water, a decrease of about 15% compared to typical levels.

The water fountain in Daegwanryeong is being used to address the water shortage caused by the drought. Citizens, including one who was recently captured on camera collecting water from the fountain, rely on it for their daily needs.

The situation in Gangneung is so dire that fire tanker trucks are preparing to help. The National Fire Agency has confirmed their readiness to assist the region amid the drought that has caused significant damage.

President Lee Jae Myung inspected the Gangneung region on Aug. 30, observing firsthand the effects of the severe drought. The water fountain in Daegwanryeong, a symbol of the ongoing struggle against the drought, was likely a poignant sight during his visit.

This drought crisis in Gangneung is a stark reminder of the challenges posed by climate change. The measures taken, such as the use of water fountains for emergency water needs, are examples of the innovative solutions being employed to cope with the water shortage caused by the drought.
