Doug Flutie's Long-Lost Heisman Trophy Jacket Returned After Three Decades

In a heartwarming reunion last week, former NFL quarterback Doug Flutie received his 1985 Cotton Bowl jacket, a cherished memento from his illustrious career, after more than three decades. The jacket was returned by a woman named Pat McCarthy, who had found it in 1993 and kept it for three decades before deciding to return it to its rightful owner.

The jacket holds significant sentimental value for Flutie, who won the Heisman Trophy a week after throwing the Miracle in Miami pass. The jacket was a special commemoration of his winning the prestigious award in 1984. Flutie, who played 12 seasons in the NFL, spent four years as a backup for the San Diego Chargers, three seasons with the Patriots, and as many with the Bills before ending his NFL career by playing one more season in New England.

The jacket was found by McCarthy's son at a party and kept by the family for three decades. McCarthy, who made a trip to Massachusetts from Rockland to return the jacket, waited for three decades to meet Flutie in person to return the jacket. Flutie's father-in-law and father also had one of the jackets, making the return of this particular jacket even more special.

Flutie was surprised and emotional upon receiving the jacket. A local reporter informed him about the gift before he headed into Campanelli Stadium. The return of the jacket occurred during 'Doug Flutie Night' for the Brockton Rox baseball team. Joe Pineiro, the person who returned the jacket, was present for the emotional reunion.

Flutie believes only five maroon jackets from the 1985 Cotton Bowl win were made, making the return of this jacket even more significant. The jacket is a testament to Flutie's incredible career, a career that began in the United States Football League before joining the Bears in 1986.

This heartwarming story serves as a reminder of the power of sports and the enduring bond between athletes and their fans. It's a story that highlights the importance of cherishing moments and holding onto memories, even for three decades.
