Workers' Exposure to Ionising Radiation: Commission Proposes Directive for Safety Measures

German Farmers' Association Criticises EU Commission Over Customs Deal with USA

The German Farmers' Association has voiced its disapproval over the customs deal between the European Union (EU) and the United States, with incoming General Secretary Stefanie Sabet leading the criticism.

In an interview with Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Sabet expressed her concerns about the agreement, stating that the EU Commission has made concessions at the expense of agriculture. She believes that the deal does not guarantee production and environmental standards for US competitors in sectors such as pork, fruit, vegetables, and dairy.

Sabet also criticised the lack of protection for sensitive products, particularly wine and spirits, in the agreement. She emphasised that the current deal is extremely damaging for European agriculture, which is already under pressure from rising costs, regulatory requirements, and increasing global competition.

The German Farmers' Association is particularly concerned about the potential 15% tariff on EU agricultural and food exports under the deal. Sabet urged the EU Commission to continue negotiating with the USA on tariff reduction and balanced market access, as well as the protection of sensitive products.

The EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has been tasked with continuing the negotiations on the treaty between the EU and the USA. Sabet's comments come as the customs deal is a subject of criticism from the German Farmers' Association and faces scrutiny over its potential impact on European agriculture.

The Association believes that the EU Commission has made agreements that are detrimental to agriculture and has urged the Commission to reconsider its approach to the customs deal. Sabet's comments serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting European agriculture in any future trade agreements.
