Workers' protection from radiation risks has been a focus of the Commission, as they have played a role in the creation of a proposed directive.
In the heart of Düsseldorf, the annual Clean-Up Day took place on a sunny spring day, with three groups – Düsseldorf Drug Help, Bürger Verein Hellerhof, and the children's daycare centre "Little Elephant" – receiving awards for their commendable efforts.
The awards ceremony, held in the Jan Wellem Hall of the town hall, was graced by the presence of Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller, Pro Düsseldorf Chairwoman Renate Böhnh, and Dominic Mc Vey, from the sponsor German Postcode Lottery. In his welcome speech, Mayor Keller emphasised the value of volunteers' efforts in keeping the city clean and invited all Düsseldorf residents to join the Clean-Up Day on April 5, 2025.
Among the awardees, the "Little Elephant" kindergarten, with 66 children aged between four months and six years, was particularly noteworthy. Focusing on environmental awareness and sustainability, the kindergarten regularly visits the forest to collect litter and engage in upcycling activities, waste separation, urban gardening, and swap markets.
The Bürger Verein Hellerhof, active for 38 years, promotes community life in Hellerhof. They hosted a spring clean-up event on March 29, 2025, with the meeting point for the "Hellerhof Spring Cleanup" being the glass containers on the Aldi parking lot, Carlo-Schmid-Straße 2 in Hellerhof. The group cleans the area around Düsseldorf's main station and so-called scene spots.
Düsseldorf Drug Help, which has been supporting drug-consuming individuals for over 50 years, runs the "The Clearing Ones" project since January 2021. This project aims to provide a structured daily routine and alternatives to their usual scene through practical activities. Patrick Pincus, head of the survival aid department at Düsseldorf Drug Help, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to participate in the Clean-Up Day and highlighted the importance of community and environmental awareness.
Looking forward, prominent figures such as Oliver Fink of Fortuna Düsseldorf and model Anna Hiltrop are promoting participation in the Trash-Free Day 2025, which is on April 5, 2025. Registration is available on the website www.trash-free-day.de. A small workshop by the "World Savers Gang" will be held before the litter collection, led by Polli the polar bear.
The "Hellerhof Spring Cleanup" has become a regular event since the Corona pandemic, reflecting the city's commitment to maintaining a clean and sustainable environment. As the date for the 2025 Clean-Up Day approaches, over 10,000 people have already registered, demonstrating the city's collective resolve to make a difference. The Children's Parliament in District 10 is also involved in the event, emphasising the association's commitment to sensitising children to the issue of litter and nature conservation.
