Miami International Airport Struggles with Lost Luggage and Complex Layout
Miami International Airport (MIA), known as a significant gateway to the Caribbean and Latin America, has been facing challenges with lost luggage and a complex layout. The airport, which handled 152,000 passengers daily in 2024, lost 5.5 bags for every 1,000 passengers, representing over 800 bags going missing on a daily basis.
The airport's confusing layout, due to decades of piecemeal expansion, has been a source of frustration for both newcomers and frequent fliers. Described as a labyrinth with confusing signage, long, circuitous walks between gates, and a general sense of bewilderment, navigating the busy airport can feel like a cross-country hike.

A survey by shipping and logistics specialist Arka analysed data to identify which airports are the most prone to baggage mishaps. The survey labelled MIA as the worst airport in the world for losing luggage. However, with the modernization plan underway, improvements are expected in the future.
