Athletic Club player Yeray Álvarez will serve a ten-month suspension from football, the European football union UEFA confirmed on Monday. The suspension, which starts on June 2, 2022, will end on April 2, 2026.

The suspension was imposed following a violation of anti-doping rules, with traces of Canrenone, a diuretic and masking agent, found in Yeray's sample. The positive result was announced by the defender on July 10, 2022, and the disciplinary proceedings against him were opened on June 10.

The anti-doping test was conducted on May 1, 2022, following the Europa League semi-final first leg against Manchester United. The analysis of the sample was carried out by an accredited laboratory.

However, Yeray Álvarez has maintained his innocence, stating that the medication contained a prohibited substance due to a human error. He went on to explain that the medication was a hair loss prevention medication, which he had been taking due to a medical condition.

The defender, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2016, has never in his life consumed prohibited substances, he said. The footballer's team, The Athletic, has publicly shown its support for the defender throughout the proceedings.

Despite the suspension, the UEFA Anti-Doping Regulations allow Yeray to resume training with a team or use club facilities in the final two months of his ineligibility period, starting from February 2, 2026. The resolution of the case was made public this Monday.

The violation occurred during a Europa League match against Manchester United in the previous season. The case was referred to the disciplinary bodies for resolution on August 19. The UEFA disciplinary body has confirmed the sanction.

The suspension will have a significant impact on Yeray's career, as he will miss key matches for both club and country. However, the defender will look to return to the pitch stronger and continue his successful career with Athletic Club.
