After a decade-long hiatus, the duck race in Bamberg was joined by another popular event – a youth fishing contest. The contest, offered to visitors during the Sandkerwa Saturday event, saw young competitors vying for the top spot, with a special final between siblings Leonie and Moritz stealing the show.

In the heart of the city's main market square, local fishermen and culinary experts took part in the bigger contest on Sunday, but it was the youth contest that captured the audience's attention. The rules were simple: whoever fell into the water first lost. The contestants, armed with poles with soft ends only, were poised to make a splash.

A 10-year-old girl named Leonie and a 13-year-old boy named Lukas were among the participants. The contest began with a tense atmosphere, as the competitors tried to find their balance on the boards of their boats. Lukas quickly found his footing, but Leonie seemed to struggle initially.

The audience watched with bated breath as a struggle between Leonie and Moritz unfolded during the final round. The moderator, JΓΆrg Wagner, commented on Leonie's waiting time, while spectators called out her name in support. The tension was palpable, and then, suddenly, Lukas lost his balance and fell backwards into the water, eliciting great cheers from the crowd.

Moritz was declared the winner of the sibling final after 2.30 minutes, but Leonie's performance did not go unnoticed. She had come in second in the children's shooting contest earlier in the day, showcasing her determination and skill.

JΓΆrg Wagner, who moderated the contest, asked Leonie if climbing up was harder than the fight, to which she nodded decisively. Despite the loss, Leonie's spirit remained unbroken, and she was already looking forward to next year's contest.

The fishing contest in Bamberg proved to be an exciting addition to the Sandkerwa Saturday events, with young competitors like Leonie and Lukas setting the stage for a thrilling showdown. As the crowd dispersed, the echoes of cheers and laughter lingered, a testament to the spirit of friendly competition and camaraderie that the event fostered.
