"ZDF debate on climate change: candidates trial eco-friendly dishes, finding them "extremely unpalatable""
In the heart of nature, the first edition of the new ZDF format, "Green Battle - das Klima-Duell", took place. Hosted by Anni Dunkelmann, two opposing teams competed in this unique and educational programme. The teams were the brothers Maurice and Pascal from the Ruhr region, and the sisters Sabrina and Tamara from the Black Forest.
The aim of the game was not just about winning, but also about integrating sustainability into daily life. The teams had to estimate the virtual water consumption of various foods and products in several rounds. From producing one kilogram of beef, which requires 15,000 liters of virtual water, to making a computer, which uses around 20,000 liters, the teams had to think carefully about their answers.
Before the game, the teams were given "homework" to complete, which included following three DIY recipes suitable for hair, teeth, and armpits. The teams were shown completing these recipes in a clip, with one mixture made from flour and water, and another from coconut oil, baking soda, and cornstarch. Another recipe required combining coconut oil, birch sugar, and baking soda.
The teams found it "really cool" that they had to "throw" their answers instead of just saying them in the first game. The candidates, especially Maurice from the Ruhr region, expressed their desire to "do something good" with their participation and reach "younger generations" on ZDF.
One of the most interesting rounds involved estimating the water consumption for producing a 100g chocolate bar. The men's estimate was 12,000 liters, while the women's estimate was 16,000 liters. However, the actual figure was a mere 1,700 liters.
The teams competed fiercely, with Dunkelmann cheering as the women accidentally threw 21,000 liters to win a point. The brothers from the Ruhr region and the sisters from the Black Forest showed that sustainability can be fun and engaging.
The "Green Battle - das Klima-Duell" will air on Sunday, September 7, at 3:30 PM on ZDF and is available for streaming on the broadcaster's portal. With its unique approach to sustainability and education, this new format is sure to inspire and educate viewers about the importance of water conservation.
