Zelenskyy declines Putin's invitation for Moscow summit, asserting that Russia sabotages peace initiatives
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his willingness to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, under certain conditions, in a proposal that indicates at least some willingness to talk from Moscow, according to Zelenskyy.
The offer for a high-level meeting between the two leaders was raised during a discussion in December 2019, with the focus on ending the conflict in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region. Putin stated that the meeting should be well-prepared and have the potential to deliver results.
However, Zelenskyy has rejected the proposal to meet in Moscow, stating that it appears to be aimed at preventing talks rather than facilitating them. He suggests that adult leaders should emerge from high-level talks with a concrete outcome, preferably peace.
President Erdogan of Turkey has also renewed an offer to host a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy, potentially providing a neutral venue for discussions.
The proposed meeting is to take place in Beijing, but Putin suggested it could occur in Moscow instead. This suggestion came during a press conference in Beijing, where Putin also stated that the meeting should be conditional and well-prepared.
It is worth noting that the last face-to-face meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy was in December 2019. U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly asked Putin about the possibility of such a meeting, with Trump relaying this proposal before it became public.
Despite the proposal, Zelenskyy states that Kyiv sees no genuine intention from Moscow to end the war. This sentiment is shared by many, as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine continues to cause tension and concern both domestically and internationally.
As negotiations continue, the hope remains that a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy could lead to a concrete outcome and potentially bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine. The international community will be closely watching developments in the hope that peace can be achieved.
